Knead Magazine

this week, we all mourned the loss of gourmet magazine. so while this probably isn’t the best time to pitch a new food mag, i wanted to share with all of you one of my favorite pieces from my graphic design portfolio. just so everyone is clear, this is NOT a real publication. that said, if anyone is so inspired to get involved in the failing print industry…

Knead Magazine

our class assignment was to create our dream magazine and prepare some sample layouts. i immediately knew where i was headed. knead magazine is a baking magazine that caters to both experienced and novice chefs. the particular issue i created is a “special issue” focused on baking with, what else, BACON. i was really excited to get to use some real recipes and photos i had taken for the projects, and i’m really happy with how it came out. by the way, you can download a full-sized pdf copy HERE.

Knead Magazine

to answer a few questions before they are asked: it’s not a full issue of a magazine, just a few pages to show different layouts. additionally, the text of the article is just filler text (there wasn’t quite enough time during the course to write a real one). hope you enjoy! if you had the chance, what kind of food magazine would you create?

Wow! That needs to be a real magazine! I think the world KNEADS one like this! Everyone is practicing being frugal and that means a lot of home cooking again…especially breads… I have noticed are being made ….wow!

Looks lovely. If I had to create a magazine, it would definitely be a ‘How-to’ magazine. Basically, I’d have a few how-to articles with step-by-step illustration. Some how-tos could be broken down and discussed further and of course there would be recipes using each how to. Like how to make pesto. Recipes would include everything from Caprese to pizza to dips to vinagrettes! To be honest, I do this already 🙂 but not in a mag! (yet!!)

ahahahahaha that is so awesome! i was a regular photographer for a food magazine (name will stay unsaid–as the word Idaho is embarrassing) and they would never print my photos on the cover, so i would make my own mocks and then make fake pages on the inside making fun of their articles………hehehehe! HEY if you need a business partner, i’ll be the south america side~ hey don’t say print is failing! i have dreams of books 😛 nice site, never been here before.

Hey Pete – this magazine layout is fantastic!

I actually stumbled upon your baking blog around late August, a few months after I was laid off from my job in legal administration. The layoff was actually a good thing…I was stuck in a major rut. I immediately started volunteering at a bakery, and then decided I wanted to finish my schooling in graphic design. I wanted to somehow combine my two loves – graphic design and food. When I found your blog, I was completely inspired. I mentioned in passing to my husband your blog concept and the fact that you were also combining your two loves. With his support and your inspiration, I enrolled myself in a graphic design certificate program about a week later. I’m loving it, and I’m still baking.

So…thank you for great blog and for indirectly giving me an extra push! 🙂

The magazine looks good, I’d so read it if it was real!

I had to do pretty much the same assignment in my InDesign class this past quarter, though my magazine was about zombies. 😛
